I’m excited by the rise in a new way of working and delighted to be part of that movement in terms of what we can offer companies that can facilitate change, and as a member of the Organisation for Responsible Businesses.

We are in exceptional times, with the rate of change accelerating at an ever increasing pace. It seems that workplaces, and indeed society as a whole seems to be lurching from one crisis to another. These are creating and deepening existing divisions within workplaces and the wider communities we serve.

As we are starting to come out of lockdown and restarting our economy, it can be time to create a future that can start to heal these wounds. To create a future that allows people to live and prosper in harmony, to work in ways that are different than before. I believe there is a sea change in business and consumers, and we could be seeing the death throes of capitalism as we know it, and the rise of Conscious Capitalism.

Conscious Capitalism has a mission to elevate humanity through business. This is supported by four main principles.

  • Purpose – Demonstrating what it means to put purpose before profit. The profit is a means to achieve your higher purpose.
  • Stakeholder Orientation – Is recognising everyone in your ecosystem is connected. Creating solutions that offer win-win to all stakeholders. These can include the community, employees, owners, investors, society and the environment.
  • Conscious Leadership – The focus on ‘We’ by maintaining focus on the higher purpose and supporting people to create value for all stakeholders.
  • Conscious Culture – This is the fabric that underpins the how the business operates. The values, principles and beliefs. Encouraging accountability and growth to energise and unifies the organisation.

A lot of these principles resonate with the mission and outlook of ORB, and I feel we can be at the forefront of helping make the transformational change to how business is done and how businesses are perceived.

We can get involved in generative discussions that are inclusive, provide and equal voice and unlock the collective wisdom within teams, organisations and communities. To help co-create a future vision and plan to achieve that energises, unifies all around a common purpose. Business and communities can be a change for good, and that should be why they exist.

Recent surveys suggest that less than 10% of the British public want to return to what we had before Covid (BC). The lockdown and remote working has created the opportunity for workers to disengage from the rate race, to enjoy more time with family, to gain back hours of commuting time. It has allowed the environment to start to recover, for people to being to appreciate the outdoors, and the simpler things in life.

This suggests to me that the seeds of change have been sown, now they need to be watered, nurtured and encouraged to grow.
