A new web-based ‘eco-street’ has been launched by sustainability experts Envirowise to help businesses identify typical resource efficiency ‘hot spots’ and provide tailored advice on taking action.
The Envirowise Virtual Tour, known as Green Street, has been created using advanced web technology and allows users to explore an animated world via their computer. It is complete with a virtual pub, restaurant, hotel, engineering company and office. Each building has up to six different rooms relating to the type of services each establishment provides.
Within the different rooms are 'hot spots', which contain tips and advice on how to make that item more resource efficient. These are also supported by quick links to useful publications offering further free advice on tackling common resource efficiency hot spots, including ways to combat waste and practical tips for reducing water consumption and energy use.
It gives users the freedom to explore any area of the street, whether it’s the bar in the Cost Cutters Arms or the kitchen area of The Green Leaves Hotel, gaining valuable resource efficiency tips along the way. It has been designed to be as visually captivating and as user-friendly as possible, offering simple but effective advice to help businesses implement practical environmental measures.Green Street can be accessed at www.envirowise.org.uk/greenstreet
Envirowise experience has shown that companies taking action to implement the three Rs and improve their resource efficiency can save up to £1,000 per employee. In this way, resource efficiency can offer a practical way for organisations to help protect the bottom line during difficult economic conditions.
There are a huge variety of resource efficiency opportunities open to businesses, whatever their size or industry sector. By ‘resource efficiency’ we mean activities designed to reduce the amount of raw materials or consumables being used by an organisation, as well as minimising water and energy use wherever possible. It is encapsulated in the three ‘R’s’ of the ‘waste hierarchy’ which many readers will be familiar with – Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.
From April 2010, Envirowise services will become part of a ‘one-stop-shop’ managed by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) giving businesses a single port of call for all matters relating to resource efficiency. Until then businesses can access free, independent, practical advice on resource efficiency by visiting www.envirowise.gov.uk or calling the Envirowise advice line on 0800 585 794.
